What’s in a Name
“What does Bas Bleu mean?” This is a frequent question posed to Bas Bleu staff, so we thought we’d share a little history about the name of our catalog.
Bas Bleu is French for "bluestocking," and refers to learned mid-eighteenth-century women (and men) who gathered in the great salons of London for intellectual conversation and witty banter. Notable bluestockings include Elizabeth Montagu and Elizabeth Vesey.
This literary salon "enjoyed society in undress" - that is, in their more practical country clothing, most notably their blue wool stockings. The bluestockings enlarged boundaries of what women could think, write, and do. Modern-day bluestockings are avid readers, have a sense of humor, and are eternally curious.
Thirty-some years ago, Bas Bleu’s founder, herself a modern bluestocking, thought the name “Bas Bleu” embodied her vision for the catalog: a space for smart bookish folk to find quality book recommendations and literary treasures. A few years later, the Bas Bleu Society was born, a loyalty program that offers members free shipping and a discount on books for only $30 a year.
Today, Bas Bleu continues to honor those original bluestockings by selling books and gifts that offer elements of wit, wisdom, and joy. Our selections are eclectic and rarely appear on bestseller lists, and our customers comprise a wonderful community of modern bas bleus.
